About Morissette

A Cebu Childhood Wired for Music

Morissette was born Johanne Morissette Daug Amon on June 2, 1996, in Minglanilla, Cebu, the elder of two children raised by her mother, Analie Daug, and her father, rock musician Amay Amon.

Her unusual names carry a melodic backstory. “Johanne,” pronounced “Yohan,” was her father’s nod to the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, while “Morissette” came from his admiration for Alanis Morissette.

Music seemed almost predestined. The family first noticed her gift when, at three years old, she belted Regine Velasquez’s “You Are My Song” into a karaoke microphone.

By her grade-school years she was a fixture on the Cebu contest circuit, taking on demanding material like Christina Aguilera’s rendition of “Reflection” and collecting trophies along the way. She studied at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy in Minglanilla and performed front-act sets for visiting stars such as Sarah Geronimo and Kim Chiu.

She also quietly developed the rare whistle register that would become her signature, crediting Filipina diva Nina and Mariah Carey as inspirations. Regine Velasquez and Sarah Geronimo, meanwhile, shaped the powerhouse style she would grow into.

From Talent Shows to Team Sarah

As a teenager, Morissette competed on TV5 programs including Talentadong Pinoy and the network’s Star Factor, where she finished as first runner-up.

In 2012 she stepped onto the theatrical stage as Mitchie Torres in Repertory Philippines’ adaptation of Disney’s Camp Rock, a physically punishing run that left her diagnosed with vocal cord nodules.

The turning point arrived in 2013, when she auditioned for the first season of ABS-CBN’s The Voice of the Philippines with Beyoncé’s “Love On Top.” Sarah Geronimo, one of her childhood idols, turned her chair, and Morissette advanced all the way to the semifinals, a run that introduced her astonishing range to a national audience.

Becoming “Asia’s Phoenix”

Morissette signed with Star Music in 2014 and released her platinum-certified self-titled debut album in 2015, powered by the single “‘Di Mapaliwanag.”

But it was a live cover that turned her into a phenomenon. Her Wish 107.5 rendition of Little Mix’s “Secret Love Song” eventually surpassed 100 million YouTube views, making her the first female OPM artist to reach that milestone.

Her commanding sets at the Asia Song Festival in Busan, South Korea, representing the Philippines in both 2017 and 2018, earned her the nickname that has stuck ever since: “Asia’s Phoenix.”

She went on to set a record with 38 Wish 107.5 Music Awards, more than any other artist, while headlining tours like Morissette Is Made and lending her voice to Disney’s Philippine release of “A Whole New World” alongside Darren Espanto.

A Singer-Songwriter Comes Into Her Own

Around 2020, Morissette began writing and co-producing her own material, much of it with her husband and creative partner Dave Lamar, whom she married in 2021.

Through the independent label Underdog Music PH she released the self-penned EP Signature (2021), the duo project From the Sea, and the 2023 album If We Never Happened, trading belted covers for personal, songwriter-driven work.

She has continued to stretch artistically, recording Bisaya-language singles such as “Undangon Ta Ni” and “Ihilak Lang Na,” performing two solo nights at Hong Kong Disneyland in December 2024, and making her feature-film debut in 2025 as the lead of the musical Song of the Fireflies, a role that won her a Best Actress award at the 2nd Manila International Film Festival.

She is also set to headline her Ember concert and to star as Middle Allie in the Philippine staging of the musical The Notebook.

Perspective

Few voices feel like both a storm and a shelter, but Morissette’s does. She can detonate a whistle note that raises the hair on your arms, then pull all that power back into a whisper that aches, and somewhere in that range she makes a 100-million-view phenomenon feel like a private confession sung only to you.

Praise for the Artist

Morissette Amon possess one of the most incredible voices I have ever heard – and I grew up in a generation that included Donna Summer, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey… she’s that amazing. Believe me. You are missing out.
