About Alamat

Six Regions, One Group

Alamat came together in 2020 under Viva Records and Ninuno Media, guided by creative director Jason Paul Laxamana, with a concept unlike anything else in P-pop. Rather than assemble singers from one city, the group was built to represent the whole archipelago.

Each member hails from a different part of the country and is fluent in his hometown’s language — Taneo from the Cordilleras, Mo from Zambales, Tomás from Bicol, R-Ji from Eastern Samar, Jao from Pampanga, and Alas from Davao. Together they can perform in as many as seven Philippine languages.

The lineup has shifted since the group’s launch. Alamat actually debuted as a nine-member act, but three of the originals — Kin, Valfer, and Gami — have since departed, leaving the six members who carry the group today.

The name itself sets the tone. “Alamat” is the Filipino word for legend or myth, and the group weaves folklore, regional dress, and traditional instruments into a thoroughly modern pop package. The word also refers to an individual as a legend, as in, a celebrated figure.

Their fans are called Magiliw, a word that means warm or affectionate — fitting for a fandom built around cultural pride and belonging.

A Debut in Seven Languages

Alamat launched on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2021, with the single “kbye,” a track that folded seven Philippine languages into a single hip-hop-flavored pop song. It also layered in traditional touches like the kulintang and samples inspired by the tinikling folk dance.

The gamble paid off almost immediately. Within about three weeks, “kbye” climbed to number two on Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart, and Philippine outlets hailed the group as the fastest Filipino act to break into that global ranking.

The song’s music video trended on YouTube, and Alamat quickly earned a spot in Spotify’s RADAR program for rising artists. For a brand-new group, it was a striking arrival, proof that regional identity could be a strength on a mainstream stage rather than a novelty.

Building the Legend

Over the next two years, Alamat turned a bold debut into a real body of work. Their 2022 EP Pasulong delivered fan favorites like “Maharani,” “Gayuma,” and “Aswang,” and “Maharani” went on to win Best R&B Recording at the 36th Awit Awards.

In 2023 the group released their first full-length album, Isapuso, and staged their debut solo concert, Dagundong, at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City. That same year they performed at the opening of the FIBA Basketball World Cup and were named Philippine Pop Boy Group of the Year at the PPOP Awards.

Through it all, the members leaned into their differences rather than smoothing them over, consulting locals and regional songwriters so the cultural elements they borrowed were handled with care, not caricature.

The Destino Era and Beyond

Alamat kept expanding their sound with singles like “Day and Night,” “Dayang,” and “Hiraya,” and carried their music abroad with performances in Toronto and Dubai. In late 2025 they opened a new chapter with the album Destino, led by the anthemic “LuzViMinda,” a title that stitches together Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The record threads Bikol, Cebuano, Ilocano, Kapampangan, Tagalog, and Waray through its songs, a full-circle nod to the multilingual promise of their very first single. Critics noted the album’s confident lean into R&B alongside its bigger, more emotional ballads.

By 2026 the six members had branched into acting, taking on roles across Viva One series and the stage, a sign that the “legends” were writing new chapters well beyond the recording booth.

Perspective

Listening to Alamat feels like taking a road trip across the whole Philippines without leaving your headphones. One verse might swagger in Kapampangan, the next might ache in Waray, and somehow it all lands as one confident, forward-looking pop record. They make heritage sound like the future — proof that the most modern thing an artist can do is remember where they come from.
